CLEANSING, TONING AND MOISTURISING

Technical 1

Having never had any previous make-up experience other than on myself and family and friends, I was excited to start learning the basics. In our first make-up lesson Sue taught us how to cleanse, tone and moisturise the face in preparation for the make-up. We worked in pairs and took it in turns to practice on each other. To help each other out we gave each other feedback and what we could do to improve or if we had forgotten the steps.

We cleanse, tone and moisturise the face to remove any previous make-up or grime. Even if the client is not wearing make-up you should still complete this process. This way you know you are starting from fresh. Completing all of these steps hydrates and cleanses the skin and preps it for the base.

Products
Cleanser
Toner
Moisturiser
Cotton pads
Cotton buds

Process
To cleanse and tone use cotton wool pads and pea-sized amounts of product.
1 - Cleanse
Tilt your clients head upwards slightly and using upward motions start from the neck and work upwards removing any previous product or dirt which may be on the face. Use as many cotton pads as you need until you can see that no product is left on the pads. For the eyebrows wipe across in both directions to remove any product and for the eyes place some of the cleanser on the back of your hand and using a cotton bud dip it in the product. Ask the client to look up and focus on something so you can remove product from under the eyes. Always inform your client when you will be working around their eyes. For the eyelashes get them to close their eyes and with the cotton bud rub back and forth.
2 - Toner
With the toner, use the same technique by using upward motions on the face using cotton pads.
3 - Moisturise.
To moisturise the skin place some of the product on your hands and rub together. Start from the neck and work upwards ensuring you moisturise every part.
Your client is now ready!

Overall, I found this fairly easy to complete. The only thing I found hard was working from behind my client and looking in the mirror for guidance. This was the first time we had worked on anyone else so it took a while for me to get to grips with the amount of pressure I needed to apply. After a while it became a lot easier. Sue also told us to work in upwards motions. If we were to pull downwards on the skin, it may be uncomfortable for my client. This was something I found harder as it felt more natural to me to work downwards. When I had finished the process, I felt a lot more confident in working on a clients face and removing make-up. Practicing this will help me in improving my techniques and raising my confidence levels.
